NSF Announces Pentagon-Financed Research Awards

After a long delay, the National Science Foundation today announced 17 projects that will receive support under a Pentagon-financed program to encourage social-science research on matters of war and national security. The projects were solicited and reviewed by the science foundation, but the money (a total of $8-million) will come from the Department of Defense, under an unusual joint agreement. The project, which is related to a larger Pentagon program known as the Minerva Initiative, has been greeted skeptically by some social-science organizations.
